Did you consider Pycnoporus cinnabarinus? This occurs on cherry, too.
If you make a colour spot test with KOH it is wine red in P. cinnabarinus but black in Pycnoporellus fulgens.

Hi, vice versa with KOH, P. fulgens red.

For me this resembles P. cinnabarinus. Was it hard like Trametes hirsuta or much softer (if fresh and juicy) or brittle if dry?

Indeed I mixed that up.

I recently found both species and also tested them with KOH, which I will show in a separate thread.
What was striking (and unusual) was how soft and juicy the very young specimen of Pycnoporus cinnabarinus appeared. This is not a good distinguishing feature, rather the pore colour.
